Introduction
Nesting preferences determine how your restorations are organized inside blanks. The choice you make; Group by Height or Group by Blank, directly affects how many blanks you use, how much material you consume, and how efficient your workflow will be.
This guide walks through a scenario and explains the results of each option so you can decide which setting works best for your case.
Example Scenario
Imagine you have 10 restorations with the following thickness requirements:
2 restorations: minimum 18 mm
2 restorations: minimum 14 mm
6 restorations: minimum 12 mm
Available blanks in stock:
1 × 20 mm disc
1 × 14 mm disc
Group by Height
When you select Group by Height, restorations are organized by their required thickness. Each thickness category is placed on its own suitable blank, even if this means using multiple blanks.
Step-by-step in this scenario:
18 mm restorations → Require a blank at least 18 mm thick. The 20 mm disc is selected, and both cases are placed here.
14 mm restorations → Require a blank at least 14 mm thick. The 14 mm disc is selected, and both cases are placed here.
12 mm restorations → Require a blank at least 12 mm thick. The 14 mm disc is used again, and all six cases are placed here.
Result: Both the 20 mm and 14 mm discs are used. This option prioritizes organization by restoration height, keeping each thickness grouped consistently.
Group by Blank
When you select Group by Blank, the system prioritizes conserving material by filling each blank as completely as possible. Restorations of different thicknesses are combined into a single blank whenever space allows.
Step-by-step in this scenario:
The 20 mm disc (largest available) is selected first.
Both 18 mm restorations are placed on the disc.
The 14 mm restorations are added to the same disc.
The 12 mm restorations are also placed on the disc.
Result: All 10 restorations fit onto the single 20 mm disc. The 14 mm disc remains unused and available for future jobs. This option maximizes material efficiency and minimizes blank consumption.
Conclusion
Choosing Group by Height ensures a clean, consistent workflow. Restorations are organized by thickness, with each category placed into its own blank for clarity and separation.
Choosing Group by Blank focuses on material conservation. Restorations of varying thicknesses are combined into one blank whenever possible, maximizing usage and minimizing waste.
Both options are effective, the best choice depends on whether your priority is workflow consistency or cost efficiency.
