Troubleshooting Slow CAD or CAM Workstation Performance

Created by Aubrey Loice Donato, Modified on Wed, 28 Jan at 10:09 AM by Aubrey Loice Donato

This article outlines common causes of slow workstation performance and provides corrective actions. Use this guide when experiencing lag, slow toolpath calculations, delayed STL loading, or general system instability.

1. Insufficient RAM

Symptoms

  • Freezing during scanning or design / CAM calculations

  • Slow STL imports / processing times

  • Delays when switching applications

Likely Cause

RAM usage reaches maximum capacity, forcing the system to rely on disk swapping.

Solution

Confirm RAM usage in Task Manager.
Upgrade RAM if usage regularly exceeds 60-80%.

IMPORTANT: RAM limitations affect CAD more severely than CAM.

2. Storage Near Capacity

Symptoms

  • Slow scan import / processing times

  • Delayed or failed save operations

  • Long application launch times / general slowness to Windows / PC Environment

Cause

Storage drives decrease in performance significantly when they are nearly full.

Solution

Maintain at least 15–20% free disk space.
Archive old cases to external locations or setup File Maintenance to automatically free up space.

3. CPU Thermal Throttling

Symptoms

  • MillBox calculations progressively slow

  • System becomes sluggish during heavy tasks

  • Fans running at maximum speed

Cause

CPU temperature reaches threshold and reduces frequency.

Solution

Inspect airflow paths.
Clean dust from the front grate and intakes.
Verify liquid cooling system fans operate normally.

TIP: High ambient lab temperatures may also reduce CPU stability.

4. Excessive Background Applications

Symptoms

  • Lag during mesh editing

  • Slow viewport interaction

  • Stuttering during heavy computation

Cause

Unnecessary programs consuming CPU or memory.

Solution

Close all nonessential applications, especially web browsers and cloud sync software.

5. Outdated GPU or System Drivers

Symptoms

  • Viewport lag in CAD

  • Flickering models

  • Slow rendering

Cause

Driver versions incompatible with CAD rendering engines. / Faulty Hardware

Solution

Update GPU drivers to the recommended version for your CAD software. / Replace GPU

6. Network or File Transfer Issues

Symptoms

  • Slow project loading

  • Delayed access to shared folders

Cause

Network bandwidth limitations or unstable WiFi.

Solution

Use wired Ethernet whenever possible.

Summary

Workstation slowdowns typically originate from memory limitations, storage capacity issues, thermal restrictions, or background processes. Following the steps above resolves most performance issues. For persistent problems, contact Level Up Support for diagnostic assistance.
